For more than 100 years, Gould League has made a significant impact on educational outcomes and conservation efforts and have inspired generations of Australians to be wildlife researchers, educators, pioneers and protectors.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to have government funding and or to be have been the beneficiary of major donations and bequests that have allowed our work to continue – and now with the impact of climate change bearing down on us, there’s never been a more important time for us to continue our work and provide important resources to schools, teachers and the community at large – especially whilst we rebuild after the devastating fires that killed 33 people, over a billion mammals, birds, bees and reptiles and burnt over 20 million hectares (roughly the size of Ireland) and recover from Covid 19.

Iconic Gould League launches urgent $500,000 campaign to create next generation of environmental ambassadors

Gould League—one of Australia’s oldest and most loved environmental education charities—is calling for supporters to help create the next generation of environmental ambassadors, launching a focused fundraising campaign to raise $500,000 by September 2026 to build the future of environmental education at its new Sustainability Education Centre in Cheltenham.

Founded in 1909 with then Prime Minister Alfred Deakin as its first President, the Gould League has inspired millions Australian children to protect and care for the natural world. But, after 116 years of continuous service, Gould League is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history.

Young Australians feel overwhelmed by the multiple environmental crises they have inherited – but practical, hands-on learning, like that provided by Gould League, builds agency and empowerment. Gould League provides the skills to thrive, not just survive, in a rapidly changing world. But to continue this important work, we urgently need support from people who believe in the power of immersive learning to inspire and equip children and communities to create a more sustainable and hopeful future!

A once‑in‑a‑generation opportunity – but only if the community steps in

The Victorian Government is establishing new facilities for Gould League at Le Page Primary School in Cheltenham. The new facilities will enable us to deliver waste and biodiversity education programs for Kinder to Grade 6 students, as well as our teacher professional development, business and community programs.

The new facilities will consist of three modular classrooms, an administration block that can also be used as an additional classroom, and a toilet block, with undercover walkways and fencing. The Victorian Government will lease the new facilities to us at peppercorn rent for the next 20 years.   During this time, the new centre is expected to reach at least 140,000 students, 20,000 teachers and 20,000 community and business members.

The buildings, however, must be brought to life. To do so, Gould League must raise $500,000 to transform the space into an immersive, inspiring learning environment that reinvigorates the magic of its much‑loved original centre – and secure the organisation’s immediate future in challenging times.

Funds will transform the facilities to create vibrant, immersive learning environments, sparking curiosity and action:

  • A revitalised Wastelands Recycling Education Room, complete with real‑world STEM equipment such as a plastics extruder, melter and moulds
  • Immersive, interactive technologies including virtual reality, touchscreens and advanced microscopes
  • Creative entrances and exteriors, including the iconic “Incredible Shrinking Machine” entrance to the Giant Compost Bin
  • A covered outdoor classroom with biodiversity gardens, aquaponics, wicking beds and vertical gardens
  • Solar panels and water tanks to demonstrate real‑world sustainability in action

A call to action

Gould League is urging philanthropic partners, businesses, community groups and individual donors to help secure the future of this iconic Victorian institution. Every donation makes a difference and directly funds effective environmental education.

With a September 2026 fundraising deadline, the organisation hopes to open the new Sustainability Education Centre in early 2027.
