Excursion Program Overview

It’s Cuddly Koala’s birthday and you and your favourite soft toy are invited to the beach for a picnic to celebrate! Through imaginative play, children will discover how much waste we make sharing a meal and what happens when we litter. They will learn how to correctly sort waste, make waste-wise choices and how waste items, like metal and food scraps, can be recycled. It’s the perfect program to introduce four-year-olds to the basics of the Circular Economy.

Activities includes:

Teddy Bears Picnic: Children share a special birthday picnic with their favourite soft toy and learn how much waste is created from a meal. A visit from Toby the Turtle will show children how our rubbish enters the environment and steps we can take to prevent litter.

Sorting the Waste: Students will be shown how to correctly sort waste into different categories including landfill, recycling, organics and reusable items.

Recycling Rules: A visit to our Wastelands Room will show children how common waste items, like aluminium, are recycled and the important role they play in the recycling process.

Giant Compost Bin: Students will venture through our “Incredible Shrinking Machine” to explore inside a compost bin. They will meet the minibeasts that call this place home and discover how these creatures can recycle our food waste.

Waste Wise Picnic: Making waste-wise choices is the ideal way to reduce our waste problem. Children will uncover how little waste is created when we pick items for our picnic that can be reused again and again.

Duration: We recommend 1 hour and 30 minutes with a 15 minute break halfway through.

Restrictions: Maximum of 25 children per group.  Suitable for 4 year old Kinder Student only. Adults are free of charge and we suggest one adult for every three children to aid supervision. No younger siblings please.

Equipment: All children participating in this program are strongly encouraged to bring a Teddy or soft toy from home or their childcare centre.
