In 2026, the UN Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, we pay tribute to the Wedge-tailed Eagle (Aquila audax), Australia’s largest living bird of prey. This apex predator plays an important role in controlling invasive species and maintaining environmental health.
We also pay tribute to Bunjil (or Bundjil), a revered creator spirit and ancestral being in the Dreaming stories of the Kulin Nation, who is depicted as a powerful Wedge-tailed Eagle that formed the land, creatures, and people, acting as a protector and law-giver, with stories teaching respect for Country and community.
